About The Project
The Powderblade project consortium is made of four partners from the areas of composites design and manufacturing, composites research, and business development.
The two commercial partners in the project, ÉireComposites and Suzlon, combine ÉireComposites’ extensive knowledge of powder epoxy reinforced fibre materials with Suzlon’s vast experience in designing, building, and installing wind turbines worldwide. The University of Edinburgh will be involved ensure that the project delivers the highest quality of research WestBIC brings to the project its experience in coaching and guiding businesses to commercial success.
The Powderblade project aims to bring a step change to the way in which large wind turbine blades are manufactured. In a response to the current industrial challenges, an innovative composites manufacturing technology has been developed by ÉireComposites based on its experience of manufacturing composites for the aerospace and renewable energy sectors as well as technology transfer from research and development projects.
This new material addresses the technological issues of blade weight reduction and desired improvements in blade performance and durability by introducing new better performing advanced material technology.
Objectives
Powderblade will change the way large wind turbine blades are manufactured, transported and installed, leading to a step improvement in the cost and performance.
