The College of Science and Engineering is one of the three academic Colleges at the University of Edinburgh. With nearly 2,000 staff and 7,500 students, it is one of the largest science and engineering groupings in the UK. It is also in the front rank of the UK University science and engineering groupings for research quality and research income. The School of Engineering has wide-ranging, comprehensive and exciting research activities. The research is carried out in six multidisciplinary institutes under a broad scope of challenging engineering research themes. The Institute for Materials and Processes (IMP) joins researchers from materials science, materials synthesis and processing, and manufacturing optimisation. Relevant materials projects include Prof. Conchúr Ó Brádaigh being main contractor and primary author of the WES Materials Landscaping Study Report in June 2016, EU projects MARINCOMP and POWDERBLADE and new EPSRC-funded Centre for Advanced Materials for Renewable Energy Generation (CAMREG), being led by Edinburgh, due to commence in September 2016. Composite materials research staff include Prof. Ó Brádaigh, Dr. Eddie McCarthy and Dr. Austin Lafferty. The University hosts laboratories in composite materials testing and processing.
The Institute for Energy Systems (IES) leads the EPSRC-UK Centre for Marine Energy Research, is a partner in the Supergen Photovoltaics consortia, several Energy Technologies Institute and EU projects, and houses the FloWave tank test facility. The University also leads the IDCORE Industrial Doctorate Programme for Offshore Renewable Energy.
Established in 1997, WestBIC is the Official EU Business and Innovation Centre for Ireland’s Border, Midlands and Western Region. On a Public Private Partnership basis, WestBIC has already invested in making the global standard of innovation support available in the Region to start ups, early-stage SMEs and to wider stakeholder networks.
WestBIC supports and champions the practical needs of start-ups with tailored assistance through market validation, business modeling, sourcing capital, incubation & networking. WestBIC also works with promoters to validate business assumptions at an early stage, not only to reduce investment risk but to also reduce overall time and resources.
WestBIC also helps new businesses through its international partnering resource. WestBIC supported Entrepreneurs have access to a network of around 150 quality certified EU/BICs to support the development and growth of innovation entrepreneurs, start-ups and small to medium size enterprises (SMEs).
This provides practical international market validation, access to additional routes to market, technical know-how, raw materials & European partners.
